One height cap for every yard
Fence By-law 140-90 (Chapter 973 of the Town’s Municipal Code) says no fence on residential property may exceed 1.8 m (5.9 ft) in any yard, and a fence in a front yard may not exceed 1.2 m (4.0 ft). Corner lots have their own rules in the by-law, so ask the Town about yours.

The daylighting triangle
The by-law bars any fence, privacy screen, ornamental gateway or entranceway from a daylighting triangle with minimum dimensions of 4.5 m x 4.5 m (14.76 ft x 14.76 ft). A fence that is not on public land may be permitted inside the triangle if it does not exceed 0.6 m (1.96 ft). Check your lot against this rule before you order.

Posts must go below the frost line
The by-law says the structural supports of any fence must be driven into the ground or embedded in concrete deep enough to prevent upheaval by frost: below the frost line or at least 1.2 m (3.9 ft), whichever is greater. The PDF carries revision stamps from 1994 to 2010 and cites amendments up to 2019, so confirm the current wording with the Town’s By-law and Licensing Enforcement section.

Higher and colder on the provincial table
The provincial climatic data table lists Richmond Hill at 230 m above sea level, against 90 m for Toronto City Hall. It gives a January design temperature of -21 °C at 2.5% (-23 °C at 1%), 4,000 degree days below 18 °C and a ground snow load of 1.5 kPa, against -18 °C, 3,520 degree days and 0.9 kPa for Toronto City Hall. Aluminum does not absorb moisture, so freeze-thaw cycles do not crack or warp it.
