These points come from the Town of Newmarket, Environment Canada and OpenStreetMap routing. Rules change, so confirm with the Town before you order.
Fence heights, yard by yard
Newmarket’s Fence By-law 2019-20 sets a maximum for each yard: 1 m (3 feet) in the front yard, 1.8 m (6 feet) in an interior side yard and in an exterior side yard, and 2.1 m (7 feet) in a rear yard. A corner-lot rear yard that abuts a front or interior side yard of the next lot is held to 1.8 m, and a rear lot line on an arterial road named in the Official Plan can go up to 2.4 m (8 feet). These are the figures in the by-law text, and the Town’s copy is an office consolidation prepared for reference only.

Where the Town page and the by-law differ
The Town’s Build a Fence web page gives 2 m (7 ft) for a rear yard, while the by-law text gives 2.1 m (7 feet), and the by-law says metric measures prevail over imperial ones. The same page allows privacy screen sections up to 9 m long, against 5 m in the by-law. Both sources agree on a 3 m height for a screen at grade and a 12 m total length, and the by-law sets 2 m for a screen on a deck. Ask the Town which figure it applies before you order.

Sheet metal and other banned materials
By-law 2019-20 prohibits barbed wire, chicken wire, sheet metal or corrugated metal panels, chipboard, waferboard, plywood and devices that carry electric current. The Town’s web page lists wood, fibreglass, plastic, metal, lattice, wire, chain link and masonry as permitted materials. We could not verify whether a solid aluminum privacy panel counts as sheet metal under the by-law, so ask the Town how it reads the rule for the panel style you plan to use.

Where Newmarket is growing
The Town’s Official Plan consolidation of August 2025 lists amendments for the former Glenway Golf Club lands, redesignated for Stable Residential, Emerging Residential and Commercial use, with further amendments for Glenway Country Club and Glenway West. It also lists Shining Hill at 16200 and 16250 Yonge Street, Stonehaven Avenue lands, the Urban Centres Secondary Plan along Yonge Street and Davis Drive (adopted December 14, 2020) and the Old Main Street Tertiary Plan (adopted April 15, 2019).

Colder and snowier at the nearest weather stations
Environment Canada has no 1991-2020 normals for a Newmarket station. Toronto Buttonville A, 21.4 km from the Town offices in a straight line, records a January mean of -6.0 °C and 146.4 cm of snowfall a year. Udora, 34.1 km away, records -7.2 °C and 167.3 cm. Toronto Pearson, the comparison station, records -5.0 °C and 114.5 cm. Both stations are outside Newmarket, so read the figures as a range for the area. Aluminum does not absorb moisture, so freeze-thaw cycles do not crack or warp it.
