Fence height depends on the yard
Fence By-law 277-97 sets 1.2 m (4 ft) in the front yard, 1.8 m (6 ft) in an interior side yard, 1.2 m (4 ft) in the exterior side yard of a corner lot, and 1.8 m (6 ft) in the rear yard. Gates may go up to 30 cm over those limits, an archway forming part of an entrance may reach 2.4 m, and decorative caps on structural posts may add up to 15 cm.

Rear yard: solid panel or open lattice
The 1.8 m (6 ft) rear-yard limit comes with a construction rule. A rear-yard fence may have up to 1.8 m of open lattice work, or up to 1.52 m (5 ft) of solid panel measured from the ground, with up to 0.3 m (1 ft) of open lattice work at the top. Because open and solid designs are treated differently, ask the City how it would classify the panel style you plan to use.

The posted by-law text dates from 2012
The City’s fences page still names By-law 277-97 as its fence by-law, but the text posted with it is a consolidation made for convenience only, up to May 29, 2012. Confirm the current wording with the City before you order. Neither the page nor the by-law text states whether an ordinary fence needs a permit, so ask. A swimming pool enclosure permit is required before work begins: the page cites a 1.2 m (4 ft) fence where the water can exceed 0.6 m (24 in) in depth, under Swimming Pools By-law 2015-96.

Cornell Centre on the eastern edge
Cornell Centre sits on the eastern edge of the City’s urban area and covers about 244 hectares. The City envisions it as a residential and mixed-use key development area, and its engagement page, last updated May 19, 2026, says a secondary plan update is in progress. Confirm with the City which rules apply to a lot in a newly planned area.
