The front yard cap and the 2 m line
Barrie’s Comprehensive Zoning By-law 2009-141 limits a fence, wall or hedge in the front yard of a Residential Zone to 1 m above grade. It says any fence over 2 m should be treated as an accessory building or structure, which brings in the accessory-structure provisions, including a 4 m height limit. The by-law text we read gives no height figure for side or rear yards, so ask the City what applies to yours.

Corner lots and noise barriers
A corner lot that needs a front yard must keep a sight triangle clear: 5 m by 5 m where the corner side abuts an arterial or collector road, and 3 m by 3 m between two local roads. Where two fence standards conflict, the one requiring the higher fence applies. Acoustic fencing, crash walls and tight board fences required under Section 5.3.7.1 are permitted in any yard.

No permit listed for a privacy fence
Barrie’s residential building permits page lists erecting a fence for privacy as work that does not need a permit. The City says the list is not exhaustive. The page speaks only to a privacy fence and shows no last-updated date, so confirm the current rule with the City.

Hewitt’s, Salem and Allandale
The City’s growth management page says the Hewitt’s and Salem secondary plans were completed in December 2016. The same page names the Downtown Barrie Urban Growth Centre, which covers a significant portion of the historic Allandale neighbourhood.

Colder and snowier than Toronto, per the nearest station
Barrie has no station in Environment Canada’s 1991-2020 normals. The nearest is Egbert, 19.1 km southwest of City Hall and outside Barrie. It records a January mean of -7.2 °C and 174.1 cm of snowfall a year, against -5.0 °C and 114.5 cm at Toronto Pearson. Egbert has 154.6 days a year with a daily minimum at or below 0 °C, against 130.6 at Pearson, and 69.5 days when the maximum stays at or below 0 °C, against 49.5. Aluminum does not absorb moisture, so freeze-thaw cycles do not crack or warp it.
